Cognitive Impairment Assistance

While brain injuries can present a lot of different problems for victims, cognitive impairment is one of the most significant issues. It is something that is noticed right after a brain injury, and if left untreated, it can create serious problems for a person as they try to recover. Cognitive impairment is serious because it affects a person’s ability to complete everyday tasks. This makes it difficult for them to regain their independence and live their lives as they want to. Common symptoms of cognitive impairment include difficulty with:

  • Place or time orientation
  • Memory
  • Self awareness
  • Judgement
  • Attention
  • Concentration
  • Processing information
  • Language
  • Communication
  • Visual perception

The team at the Northeast Center for Rehabilitation and Brain Injury understands these issues. They understand how important it is to treat these issues and help patients improve their quality of life. Commitment to helping with cognitive impairment is one of the ways in which the Northeast Center separates itself from other facilities.

Brain Injury Specialists

The Northeast Center for Rehabilitation and Brain Injury prides itself on being specialists when it comes to brain injuries. They understand that after a person sustains a brain injury, it becomes more difficult for them to process and understand information. They also understand that the only way to help in improving cognitive brain function is to provide focused rehabilitation from trained professionals.

This is what the Northeast Center offers! They are the largest program in the world to dedicate their facility to brain injury. They try to create a culture of community within their facilities so that every patient gets the support that they need.

Neuro-Rehabilitation Program

At the Northeast Center for Rehabilitation and Brain Injury, they follow a neuro-rehabilitation program (NRP) to help their patients improve behaviorally, physically, and cognitively after they sustain a brain injury. This program runs in twelve week cycles and lasts from three months to twelve months. It offers core classes and resources to patients, who are assigned to the correct level given their injury and prognosis. There are six levels that patients are sorted into.

At the core of the NRP is the Community Access Program. This program takes patients through seven steps to provide important resources both inside and outside of their facilities. By the time a patient reaches the seventh step, they will have gained a significant amount of self sufficiency to assist them with their recovery. The NRP helps to improve skills such as:

  • Self care
  • Mobility
  • Attention
  • Communication
  • Daily planning
  • Self awareness
  • Conflict resolution
  • Brain function
  • Disability education
  • Self advocacy
  • Relationship development
  • Anger management
  • Mood self regulation
  • Problem solving
  • Personal future planning
  • Information management
  • Working with a treatment plan/team
  • Family education
  • Community skills
  • Wheelchair training
  • Using electronic assistive devices
  • Money management
  • Discharge planning
  • Developing leisure interests
