Treatment

A few common treatments offered at Montefiore’s orthopedic spine surgery division are:

  • Anterior cervical decompression and fusion
  • Posterior cervical decompression and fusion
  • Minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion
  • Minimally invasive microdecompression and microdiscectomy
  • Motion sparing surgery

You can learn more about these treatment options below.

Anterior cervical decompression and fusion is a treatment option for those who are experiencing pain in the arms or the neck. This is a surgery in the front of the neck and causes minimal trauma to the body. Many patients will be discharged shortly after surgery, usually the next day.

Posterior cervical decompression and fusion is also a form of surgery that helps give patients relief from neck and arm pain. Too much compression in the spinal cord can cause hand function difficulty and balance difficulty. This procedure puts an incision in the back of a patient’s neck. Again, patients are generally released from the hospital after a day or two.

Minimally invasive lateral lumbar interbody fusion is another surgical procedure that can relieve shooting pains in a patient’s back or legs. The surgery requires an incision on the side of a person’s abdomen.

Minimally invasive microdecompression and microdiscectomy helps patients that have herniated discs. It is a surgery requiring an incision in a person’s back, and is meant to relieve inflammation and pressure in the back. Many times, patients are released from the hospital the same day as the surgery takes place.

Motion sparing surgery is a type of surgery to help patients manage cervical spine diseases. This surgery is an alternative to cervical spine fusion. Various techniques are used with this type of surgery, including laminoplasty and cervical disc replacement.
